All Muslims know that there is reward in reading or reciting the Quran. Even for those who find it difficult to read in Arabic, the Prophet ﷺ encourages us with “Whoever recites one letter of the Quran will be rewarded for it, and the reward will be multiplied ten times.” And for those who recite as a source of worship, we are encouraged with:
“Recite the Quran, for it will come as an intercessor for its reciters on the Day of Resurrection.”
Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) [Sahih Muslim]
The Quran itself gives many reasons why reading it benefits us. Here are fifteen of them for you to ponder. Want to dig a little deeper? Look up the mentioned ayas, read them in Arabic and/or your favorite translation, maybe even memorize them!
- Reward: Reciting the Quran is a great source of reward for Muslims. “Indeed, those who recite the Book of Allah and establish prayer and spend [in His cause] out of what We have provided them, secretly and publicly, [can] expect a profit that will never perish” (Quran 35:29).
- Guidance: The Quran serves as a guide for Muslims, providing guidance on how to live a fulfilling life and make ethical decisions. “This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah.” (Quran 2:2)
- Peace: Reading the Quran can bring peace and tranquility to the reader. “Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.” (Quran 13:28)
- Healing: The Quran can provide spiritual, emotional, and physical healing to the reader. “And We send down of the Quran that which is healing and mercy for the believers…” (Quran 17:82)
- Knowledge: The Quran contains a wealth of knowledge about various subjects, including history, science, and ethics. Here’s one example describing embryonic development. “Then We made the sperm-drop into a clinging clot, and We made the clot into a lump [of flesh], and We made [from] the lump, bones, and We covered the bones with flesh; then We developed him into another creation. So blessed is Allah, the best of creators.” (Quran 23:14)
- Protection: The Quran can protect the reader from harm. “Say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak. From the evil of that which He created. And from the evil of darkness when it settles. And from the evil of the blowers in knots. And from the evil of an envier when he envies.'” (Quran 113:1-5)
- Inspiration: The Quran can inspire the reader to be a better person. “Indeed in that is a reminder for whoever has a heart or who listens while he is present [mindful].” (Quran 50:37)
- Unity: The Quran promotes unity and brotherhood among Muslims. “The believers are but brothers, so make peace between your brothers.” (Quran 49:10)
- Remembrance: Reading the Quran helps the reader remember Allah and His teachings. “And recite to them the news of him to whom We gave [knowledge of] Our signs, but he detached himself from them; so Satan pursued him, and he became of the deviators.” (Quran 7:175)
- Reflection: The Quran encourages critical thinking and self-reflection. “Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.” (Quran 3:190)
- Justice: The Quran emphasizes justice and fairness. “And do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness.” (Quran 5:8)
- Hope: The Quran provides hope to the reader. “And never give up hope of Allah’s mercy. Certainly, no one despairs of Allah’s mercy except the people who disbelieve.” (Quran 12:87)
- Forgiveness: The Quran emphasizes the importance of forgiveness. “And let them pardon and overlook. Would you not like that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.” (Quran 24:22)
- Love: The Quran teaches the importance of love and compassion. “And do not forget kindness among yourselves. Surely Allah sees your actions.” (Quran 2:237)
- Gratitude: The Quran encourages regular expressions of gratitude. “So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me.” (Quran 2:152)
